'Intellectually disabled' writer calls out the media’s lack of diversity

A 28-year-old writer living with intellectual disability has bemoaned the attitude of the media towards persons living with disabilities, saying issues regarding their challenges and successes are not often and appropriately highlighted.

Muktar Mohammed Abu, who is also a blogger, told Morning Starr host Kafui Dey, he wants to become a journalist in order to properly project the right perception and “possibly” influence the attitude of society towards persons living with such conditions.

Mukeey as he is more affectionately called said he started blogging in 2012 and often feels a sense of fulfilment when he successfully makes a post.

According to him, becoming a journalist will help him achieve his ultimate goal and give him the right platform to educate people and help them understand what goes on in their world.

“I want people to understand disability” he said.

A post on Muktar’s blog, mukeeydisabilityconsult.blogspot.com, on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 reads;
